The 1881 census shows Horace aged 43 living at Beech Cottage, London Road, Tonbridge, Kent, occupation Gardener. Place of birth Wrotham there appears to be confusion as to the place of birth brother Alfred is shown variously as being born at Wrotham and Hadlow.
