Joan was born August 22 1941at 26 Hawkenbury Road Tunbridge Wells, Kent She was the second child of Harry and Molly Ranger nee Marsh. Harry's family originally came from Underriver, Kent and Molly grew up in Seaham, County Durham. Joan grew up in Hawkenbury, Tunbridge Wells. She went to St Peters Primary School, and Bennett Memorial Secondary School, Tunbridge Wells, Kent. On leaving school Joan took employment at Sibthorpes selling ladies fashions. The money was poor so she took work at Erie Resistors as a component tester, at High Brooms Tunbridge Wells Kent. From there Joan joined the Post Office as a telephonist a job she enjoyed and retained until she started a family. She married John Garrett who was a Post Office Engineer in 1962. They had two children David and Julie. Joan was a happy go lucky person with a great sense of humour a good mother and wife. She was very settled in Tonbridge with her husband and children. In April 1978 Joan suddenly took ill with a virus infection and tragically died in Pembury Hospital on April 15 1978 suffering from septicemia and kidney failure brought on by the virus. It left her husband, family and friends shocked and totally desolated. She was such a popular person and is greatly missed.

Joan married John William Hastings - Garrett, son of William Charles Hastings-Garrett and Beatrix Evelyn Ada Woodhams.
